Tips to Prepare You for Dental Implant Surgery
August 9, 2022
When it comes to replacing missing teeth, there is one option that stands out among all others: dental implants! These awesome little implants are able to fully restore your lost pearly whites in terms of look, feel, and functionality. But as exciting as this sounds, you might have some initial questions about the procedure and what you need to do to prepare for dental implant surgery. Here are three useful tips to help you ready yourself for the process.
Tip #1: Be Well-Informed Before Your Procedure
You should ask your dentist any initial questions that you have about the dental implant process. As a patient, you have the right to fully understand what you’re about to undergo! Your dentist will happily review the specifics of your treatment plan with you and ensure that you feel comfortable with everything. Sometimes a patient might need a little prep work done, such as a supplemental bone graft or a tooth extraction. Other times, something like gum disease needs to be cleared up first. In any case, don’t hesitate to seek clarification from your dentist about anything you’re unsure about; after all, they’re the expert!
Tip #2: Follow Pre-Op & Post-Op Instructions
Depending on the specifics of your treatment, you’ll be given instructions to follow before and after your procedure. These instructions concern things like aftercare, diet, and anything else relevant. It’s imperative that you follow these guidelines closely, so you don’t risk jeopardizing your implants or oral health! For instance, you might be asked to refrain from eating or drinking anything the night before surgery if you’re going to receive IV sedation. And you’ll often have medication to take after the surgery, as well as specific dos and don’ts.
Tip #3: Don’t Be Afraid to Ask for Help
Dental implant surgery is a pretty significant procedure, so your body is going to need plenty of rest and recovery afterwards. You’re going to need a ride home after the surgery, and it’s recommended that you have someone stay with you for at least a few hours following your procedure, to keep an eye on you and provide any necessary assistance. This can also make it much easier to acquire any essential supplies you might need, including soft foods for your diet following surgery. You should also call your dentist or oral surgeon if you’re experiencing any issues or have specific questions. You’ll be back to normal after a few days, but don’t hesitate to ask for aid when you need it—you don’t have to go about this alone at all.
Dental implants can completely change your life; but their success is heavily dependent on your willingness to do things correctly, both before and after your procedure! Following these tips will ensure that your recovery period is smooth and that your implants are ultimately able to do their job.
